Indiana middle school, high school, and college students can win up to $500!
This Year’s Theme: “Keeping Indiana Strong with Coal”
Video Contest dates change to Sept. 18th to Oct 28th

The South Knox High school’s Industrial Art’s students spent some time at Vincennes
University’s Gibson Center in Ft. Branch IN. The students, who were directed by South Knox’s
High school Instructor Bob Green, were on a field trip to learn more about mining. Vincennes
University’s Mining Program Director Kevin Hills spoke on the different types of mining, safety
aspects of each type of Mining Industry. Students were then given an extensive tour of the
University’s simulated Underground Mine located on the Gibson Center’s campus.
The Mine Rescue Association of Indiana held its Annual Mine Rescue, Bench and Preshift
contest this past June at the Vincennes University’s simulated underground mine at the Ft.
Branch IN campus. Competing in the event was: Alliance Coal Gibson County and Warrior
Mines, Indiana State Combination Mine Team, Sunrise Coal Oaktown Mines and Peabody Coal
Francisco Mine and the Martin Marietta metal/nonmetal mine Team. The two day event was
assisted by the Mine Safety Health Administration, Indiana and Kentucky Mine Inspectors along
with the Directors of the MRAI board.
The Mine Rescue Association of Indiana first contest began in 1989 in Washington IN. The
Association was established to help support, fund and make available these types of Training
exercises to better educate each of the Teams if and when they were ever called upon to assist
their fellow miners in an emergency situation.
Southwest Indiana Buffalo Trace Council Boy Scouts made a visit to Vincennes University’s
Mining Program at the Gibson Center in Ft. Branch Indiana. Forty-Five Scouts from the area spent four hours learning about the Mining Industry, touring the simulated Underground Mine and most of all, each Scout earned and received their Merit Mining Badge
